"A Royal Ranger is alert - he is mentally, physically and spiritually
alert."
"Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must
master it." (Gen. 4:7)
On July 30, 1998 Duane posted the following devotion:
To become a hunter, a young Indian boy must develop skill and cunning to
capture a wild bird of prey - like the eagle!
Lil' Bear was such a boy. He dreamed of the plunder he could trade for
the feathers and talons of an eagle and of the pride in capturing the
wild king of the sky.
He lived on the Pacific coast in a land of cool streams and tall timber
of fir and cedar with his tribe, the Klinkets.
Lil' Bear asked his grandfather about trapping the eagle and the old man
looked away at the hillside and then back to the boy. "The person who
can trap the eagle is a very wise person, for the eagle can fly and has
remarkable eyesight and is himself a skilled hunter."
Lil' Bear was discouraged as he felt he was not a match for the task.
All day he would sit on a bluff and watch the eagles fly and hunt for
fish in the abundant sea. He sat and watched and began to wonder if the
eagle saw him sitting there. He saw the eagle swoop down to the surf
and snatch a fish and as it flew up the hillside, Lil' Bear was able to
look in the great bird's eye so big and yellow ... and he had the
feeling he was being watched!
The next day Lil' Bear brought a fish. He climbed down to the sand and
laid the fish on a log, then climbed back up the hill. The great bird
later flew over, circled and when sure he would be safe, came down from
the sky and landed on the log. When the eagle took the fish and flew,
Lil' Bear knew he had found a plan and went home early that day.
Each day the boy would lay a big salmon on the same place on the log.
Each day he would climb back up to wait - except he would move just a
bit closer each day! He wore the same outfit and always was very
patient and quiet, waiting for the eagle to land.
Before the season had ended, the Indian boy was able to sit on the log
and have the eagle land beside him. Day after day this would happen.
Fish on the log - Indian boy- eagle - no problem!
Lil' Bear was able to reach out with his hand and feed the eagle. So it
went until the very last day of the season. Lil' Bear simply reached
out and captured the eagle.
Boys, sin is not something you desire in your heart. You start by
seeing something and then, day-by-day you become used to it. You get so
used to it that you can sit right beside it and know it will not capture
you.
The evil one (Satan) knows this and knows how to capture you. All he
has to do is bait the trap and wait. He will tempt you and get you and
like the eagle, you will be fooled into a trap. In the end, you may
even welcome him closing the door on you."
Recently, I read the following quote in "Washington Watch" (published by
Family Research Council) which reminded me of this devotion - posted
almost a year ago:
"Vice is a monster of so frightful mien,
As to be hated needs but to be seen;
Yet seen to oft, familiar with her face,
We first endure, then pity, then embrace."
Alexander Pope

whom he may devour." (1 Peter 5:8)
