What we learnt at school is this:
The Celts were the original population of the British isles. They were
driven back to the Welsh mountains and to Scotland (north of Hadrian's Wall)
by the Romans. Other nations who conquered the islands (Angles and Saxons
from Germany, Normans (William the Conqueror) from France) did their work on
the remaining celtic population, too.
Today there are to main celtic 'dialects': Gaelic which some Scots and parts
of the Irish population are still speaking and Welsh.
