Here are my DM -.04 on that one:
Over here, we don't think anything will chang in US abortion-policies under
the rule of GW. So where is the problem? If GW won't change the situation
why should it be worse to vote for Gore? The problem will still be the same.
Both candidates surely do have parts in their programs that could/should be
dicussed. So why do you make abortion the only topic in this election. I am
not pro abortion, but I am for a realistic view of political issues. Neither
Gore's nor GW's program is about abortion only.
As the discussion is now changing into a discussion about abortion (and no
more about this Pastor's quote) I really enjoy reading it again.
We had similar discussions here in Germany. German laws provide women with a
right to abortion, but they are very strict on that issue. Before you can
have an abortion you have to visit an acknowledged counselor where you will
have to discuss the pros an cons. If you (after that discussion) still want
an abortion the counselor will enable you to do so by a document stating
that you have visited him/her. Without this document you will not get a
(legal) abortion.
The Catholic Church in Germany maintained a system of counselors that worked
very effective. A high percentage of women visiting a Catholic counselor did
NOT abort their children. Then the Pope forbid the German Catholics to
maintain that system because of the possibility to have an abortion after
visiting a Catholic counselor without regarding the positive numbers (which
were probably the highest rates among all counselors).
Now Catholic christians have started a private initiative to keep up the
good work the church once did. But there is no financial supply by the
church (except for probably some German bishops that won't obey the Pope on
that issue).
