UPC, Apostolic and Nazarene are "Oneness" Churches, as in "Jesus Name" only.

To mention the "trinity" is bad.

UPC is a very legalistic based oneness movement that split off of the AG in
it's youth back in the early days.

The Oneness movement stemmed from a "revelation" that "the name of" the
father, the son and the Holy Ghost is JESUS, so therefore, we must only
refer to Jesus himself, and not the "three names".

Some of the actually think that we believe in 3 Gods by our "Trinitarian"
views, but others of them have come to realize that the issue is more about
semantics than conflict.

I was born and raised UPC until I was 9, then my parents moved into full
time ministry the AG. I want to an AG Bible college and have been an AG PK
(Preachers Kid) all my life, yet after college I obtained my credentials
through the oneness movement (A branch off of the UPC called the
International Ministerial Association). The IMA fit closer to my doctrine
and beliefs at the time.

I now am ordained via a branch off of the AG called Global Action
International. For the same reasons I have always felt that I could not
subscribe to the entire doctrine and practice of the AG, the GAI was
formed.... but it's not "oneness" based.

I have always taught that the issue was semantics in nature, not conflict
based.

Though the UPC gets carried away (IMHO) with many things in their legalism,
they still believe the foundation in Jesus Christ and him crucified, risen
and coming again... but you'd better be baptized too.... in both water and
the Holy Ghost... or you'll miss out on heaven.

In their doctrine, The Baptism in water MUST precede the Holy Spirit, and
the baptism in water must have the words "I baptized you in Jesus Name"
versus the AG way of "I baptize you in the Name of the Father, the Son, and
the Holy Spirit".

Their entire doctrine in this regard is based solely on Acts 2:38.... that's
where the "revelation" came from at an AG camp meeting.

You can get more history about this in the AG book from GPH called "Anointed
to Serve", it's the History of the AG.

Nazarene folks are oneness, but not near as legalistic as UPC or Apostolic.

UPC & Apostolic based churches can get so radical at times, (IMHO) some of
them tend to worship the 5 letters of the alphabet for the "name of JESUS"
versus the creator and risen lord called Jesus. In the Bible, this is known
as BAAL worship.

I have many relatives and friends still in the oneness movement. Some won't
speak to me because i'm not 'of their flock', some have literally told me
that I'm going to hell for having been baptized the "AG way"... others
understand the gospel message and the fact that it's ok to have differing
doctrinal understanding, provided we believe the foundational truths of
Christ and him crucified, risen and coming again.

How we live our lives day to day seems to be more the issue in other
Pentacostal cirlces, not necessariliy the foundation doctrine.

I could go on... but I'm sure you all get the point. :-)

Parson.
