Hi Mike, We get the day off. Off cause we do not participate. Hari Raya Pausa is also know as Ramadan, what we do here is we visit our friends who are Muslem. Also, we visit our Hindu friends during Deepavali. The Chinese will have a BIG celebration for the Chinese New Year. For Good Friday, I usually take half day off, because of Easter Musical.
No conflicts or fighting during all these festival. We respect each others. The government encourage different races to visit each other. These could be due to over government party is a combination of 3 main parties - UMNO all Malays, MCA - all Chinese, and MIC - all Indian, plus few other party - Gerakan - majority Chinese, etc. Christmas is celebrated here. Shopping malls are decorated, very commercial. The brand of Islamic preached by Osama is different. I know this because my mom-in-law is a muslem, a convert, sad to say. Muslem in Malaysia is the Sunnii(sp?), more open minded. Only recently we have some fanatical sect coming in. We also have a major opposition party - PAS that are quite fanatic. Sikh and Islam are different!! Can't imagine why people think they are same. So with all of those holidays with all of their different meanings, do you get the day off regardless of religious affiliation? You have Hindu and Buddhists and Muslim and Christian there and then you have your secular Holidays like the for the Kings and such. I couldn't imagine having Good Friday off especially in a land where the Christians are in the minority. Do all of these holidays go off without a hitch or is there religious conflicts/fighting going on over them? Forgive me, but that is the only perception of it we get here in Washington. Local news media never has anything good to report and is usually jaded toward the negative. Here in the States we tend to observe mostly the Christian Holidays and some of the Jewish Holidays like Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah and the African like Kwanzaa. Occasionally we will hear about Ramadan because we have a large Islamic population here. I find it funny how our Islamic people always say that the brand of Islam that is preached by Osama and the likes is not the same as what they go by. It's ironic that in the Christian faith we have the people who can mirror them like David Koresh of the Branch Davidians for instance, he was one. Most people here don't know the difference between the Islamics and the Sikhs. I know, because I did security for the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia at their airport and educational facilities located here in Virginia.
