I switched to Vonage a few months ago and have been pretty pleased.
It costs half as much as verizon ($25 vs. $50). Plus there are tons
of free extras they throw in like unlimited long distance, caller id
with name, call waiting, voicemail, and call forwarding to name a few.
I also get an email whenever I get a voicemail that I can check over
the internet if i'm at work for example and want to see who called.
Saving the $25 also worked room in the budget for cable internet
(from dial-up)which is really required for voice over ip. I had
to buy a router and we use cordless phones now which is nice in its
own respect. I understand if someone is decent with a soldering iron
they could integrate the voice over ip into their existing phone
lines rather than use cordless or rewire. The one real downside
was mentioned about 911. You can leave your existing phones in
for 911 from your local telephone company, and when you dial
911 on the new phones it is routed to your local Public Service Access
Point or a Public Safety Answering Point which sometimes is the same
as where you 911 calls go. This will change in the next couple of
years i believe. This is definately not for everyone yet, but
overall I am very pleased.

A phone line in a house is simply just too inexpensive and to handy not
to have. Unless of course your a college student with no real dependents
at home. Then it makes ..a few.cents... not to have one. Grin!
