Abstract: This book is a study of sijobang, a form of
oral literature performed in the highlands of West
Sumatra, and is based on research done in that area in
1974-5. The book begins with an outline of the
cultural and literary setting of sijobang, including
other forms of the story of Anggun Nan Tungga (the
hero whose adventures are sung in sijobang) and the
background and training of the performers. The second
chapter contains a short summary of the story (a
fuller summary appears in Appendix 1), some remarks on
its fragmented mode of existence and unstandardized
form, and a survey of local attitudes to sijobang.
There follow transcriptions of two performances, with
English translations. These provide the basis for a
discussion of the main linguistic and literary
features of sijobang. In the final chapter the
variability of performances, and how this may be
connected with the degree of experience of the
performer, is examined in some detail.

Abstract: Sijobang, the singing of a narrative poem
about the hero, Anggun Nan Tungga by storytellers
called tukang sijobang, is one of the two oral forms
in which the story is presented in the area round
Payakumbuh, West Sumatra, the other being the randai
drama. Tukang sijobang are hired to sing excerpts from
the story at weddings and other festivities. Some data
about them are that most of them are farmers, most
receive their main instruction from an older
storyteller not related to them. The learning process
is mostly oral, combining recitation and singing.
Several tukang sijobang participate in randai, as
advisers or actors.

Abstract: The writer describes the uses and forms of
pantun occurring in sijobang (the name given to the
singing of a narrative poem about the hero Anggun Nan
Tungga in the area round Payakumbuh, West Sumatra).
Pantun are used as: a) a preliminary entertainment
before the story proper begins; b) to mark the
beginning, resumption or end of a stint of singing; c)
part of the dialogue or narrative of the story.
Examples are quoted. As regards form, the majority of
pantun are quatrains, but a few are as long as 12 and
14 lines. Nine- and eight-syllable lines preponderate.
Quatrains in which the first half conveys the sense as
directly as the second (called gurindam by some story
tellers) also occur in the story, and pantun berkait
are heard mainly among the preliminary pantun.
