Is it absolutely necessary to have the PING functionality in order for Razor-check to work? My provider seems very hesitant to allow PING traffic through the main Internet link. So would it be possible to disable the PING checks and still connect to the server? I just want to ask before I put any time in to altering the Perl code.
Well, keep in mind that razor does not use a typical "ping" ie: icmp echo request. It uses a connection to cloudmark's tcp/7 port from a random unprivleged port on your end (>1024).
It does NOT require that tcp/7 on your end be accessible, only that you be able to connect to it on their end.
I can't possibly imagine why your provider is hesitant, unless they are under some gross misunderstanding about how echo-chargen loop attacks work.
(in order to do an echo-chargen attack, one "loops" the output of a chargen port into an echo port. Commonly done with UDP, since no 3-way handshake is required. However, is the local soruceport is >1024, it can't be chargen, thus can't be a part of a echo-chargen loop).
