Hey, I'm all for all of that. To that end, there may be a role for "data
preparation" tools here. I have such a tool - "Monarch" (from
Altair/DataWatch) - in which I am irresponsibly rusty, but have used to
great effect in the past to convert PDF and tables captured from web
sites into usable ASCII and .xlsx files for import to R:BASE.
I'm due for a focused training, so if you send a sample, I'll give it a
go. No promises, but if it works ... happy to help.

I'm going out on a limb here.
I'm not sure there is a standardized XML format so you kind of have to
look at the data presented and see what you can do with it.
In the past, I've run a cursor through some pretty weird data as an
input routine.
