Mike,

I have converted data strings of a variety of computer outputs.

If you get a continuous string, you need to determine where each file begins
and ends. There is some type of marker in the string. If it is a carriage
return/line feed it will be easier. If not, you can search and replace,

The fields will likely be either fixed field lengths, or comma (or other
symbol) delimited. If fixed field, you need to know the length of each field,
and you can specify that characters 1-5 go in the first field, and 6-22 in the
next, and so forth. Comma delimited should come in field order.

You may have to remove ASCII characters that are not letters or numbers as they
may be codes that will be "confusing" to the input gateway program.

Vaguely I remember fields that did not "line up" properly. I moved subsequent
rows in a spreadsheet to get what I wanted.

R:Base has operations to (SGET( (SRPL( (SFIL( and other operations to adjust
data.

Gateway has an XML option. Hopefully your data will come in easily, and
without a glitch.

Sometimes using the gateway command from the command prompt will work even
better than the Gateway icon.

Let us know how it goes.

Mike:

Hey, I'm all for all of that. To that end, there may be a role for "data
preparation" tools here. I have such a tool - "Monarch" (from Altair/DataWatch)
- in which I am irresponsibly rusty, but have used to great effect in the past
to convert PDF and tables captured from web sites into usable ASCII and .xlsx
files for import to R:BASE.

I'm due for a focused training, so if you send a sample, I'll give it a go. No
promises, but if it works ... happy to help.

Thanks for the insight, Jan.

I will have to approach it as a way to expand my data skills.

As Mr. Memon says. "If you can dream it you can do it.". And "be sure to have
fun".

Be safe and healthy!

Best regards.

Mike,

I'm going out on a limb here.
I'm not sure there is a standardized XML format so you kind of have to look at
the data presented and see what you can do with it.

In the past, I've run a cursor through some pretty weird data as an input
routine.

Good luck,

Jan

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Importing XML data into R:BASE

Greetings:

I am tasked with importing a large amount of data in the XML format into R:BASE.

I haven't worked with the XML format much yet.

I would appreciate any suggestions on good learning resources that anyone in
R:BASE World has used to enhance their XML skills.

Thank you in advance.

Have a safe and healthy day!
