Nicky,

I did write a utility that does just that by looking at data from the system
files and then looping through all the occurrences of that columns name, naming
and renaming columns as needed. I will have to find that code and update it so
it works with the newer versions since the original was write likely for R:base
7???

The workaround I used this time was:

Download the database structure and data.

Edit the file doing a global search for the original column definition and
replace with the new definition.

Save the modified file.

Reload the database from the modified file.

Worked like a charm. There always are many ways to do things in R:Base. Having
said that, it would be nice to be able to redefine a column globally.

Subject: Re: [RBASE-L] - Changing columns size

The plodding way I got around this was to rename an instance of the column to
some name, redefine it, rename the other instances to the same name then name
them back to what they should be. Then again, I didn't have 60 instances. I'd
like to know a smarter way to do this too.

I need to change the size of a column in a table from TEXT 9 to TEXT 20;
actually and unfortunately, there are 60 instances of this column in the
database. I did write a utility once upon a time that did a lot of renaming
when multiple occurrence of the column were present and, if I recall correctly
made it available to forum members that needed that functionality. It was many,
many year ago and I will have to search my old laptops to see if I can find it.

Does the recent version include by any chance a utility to do this? If not,
does anyone have an easy way to do this?

My workaround might be downloading the database structure and data and changing
the length there and reloading the whole thing. Any help or advise will be
appreciated.
