Since I am deemed, at least most of the time, an Information Specialists it always helps to have more information. Please foward my address to your associates, it is [EMAIL PROTECTED] for my business email address or [EMAIL PROTECTED] will work as well. I do have to admit, that I am just beyond Gunnars position in that I don't know a whole lot about security and working in this area of networking. We are just about ready to do the VPN and I would like to setup my system at the house in this manner, so the learning curve is about get straightened out real quick.
Thank You Jim Limburg

Jim,
Can give you all sorts of recommendations. The real question you have to ask your self is what are your budgetary restraints. Network monitors and sniffers that are worth any thing can cost into the thousands. We to thought about this avenue when we had problems.
We recently experience problems with our network and used a couple of low cost methods for tracking network performance. On a couple of these I will have to put you in touch with our network providers. If you wish I will forward your email address to them if you send it to me.
One thing that I can explain is that when our problems started we were using standard non managed hubs and then we switched to 3 com managed switches. Once on these switches we able to gather more information on packets. Again if you get me your email address I can send you some attachments of what these reports look like (Good and Bad).
Tried to send over the list server and forgot I can't do this.
If you have any more questions please email or call me.
P.S. As it turned out the problem was not network related but the looking at the switch views you can see that we eliminated the problems. Network diagnosis is a little bit of knowledge, a lot of art, magic and witchcraft. The latter being a joke but not too much of a joke. The better you get to know your network the better you are able to manage it. This holds true with professions network managers. There are too many possibilities and they are all variable and fluid.

G-Day all
For those who play dual roles with programming and networking, those who can ask network personel, or those who just know...
Can anybody reccomend a good software package to monitor - sniff network packets that does logging, and of course as many other features for the least cost. We are about to be opening up our companies through VPNS, and maybe other methods somewhere down the road and really need to look more into the security learning curve.
Any good advice also weclome Jim Limburg
