Sniffing software is crazy expensive. The one I like the most is
Sniffer Pro. I think it's currently owned by Network Associates.
Another one I've tried but don't like as much as Sniffer Pro, but does
cost less, is EtherPeek by Wildpackets.

On a side note, sniffing may not provide you with the results you are
looking for. Sniffing packets for security would be an extremely
laborious process. I think you may be looking for more of a Firewall
package that detects and logs intrusions to addresses/ports you haven't
opened. There's 80 gajillion of those out there. Stay way from what
most people will tell you to use (BlackIce, Norton Personal Firewall,
etc) as they are nothing more than another piece of software for a true
hacker to hack. However, these personal products may work well for you
as a detection tool for your own internal testing.

G-Day all

For those who play dual roles with programming and networking, those
who can ask network personel, or those who just know...

Can anybody reccomend a good software package to monitor - sniff
network packets that does logging, and of course as many other
features for the least cost. We are about to be opening up our
companies through VPNS, and maybe other methods somewhere down the
road and really need to look more into the security learning curve.

Any good advice also weclome
