Are you using Compuserve "Classic" or the newer service.  For Classic service use the number 800-848-8990 for service in stead of the usual number.  They seem to have better answers.
 
I have found that their service is goofy sometimes.  For instance, I have Win98 and WinNT4WS systems with access.  Some years ago I changed my password on the Win98 system.  Recently I rebuilt the operating system on the NT system because of a hard drive crash.  When I tried to reconnect to Compuserve, it wouldn't accept the new password, but the old one works great.
