This depends on domain/dns/network environment, but best practices like Mike W.
has stated is less than 15 char. If you have any workstations on your network
that are Win98 and they are using Netbios/Wins configuration to navigate the
net then it only recognizes the first 15.

If your network is entirely windows 2000 or greater with 2000 servers running
dns and computers are described as computername.domainname ...
as in stevesxp.stevesdomain.com or something similar that the each segement
beteen the dots can be 64 char I think, and the whole thing up to 256.
