Have you tried uninstalling and Re-installing the network card.

Under administrative tools/services, look at the DHCP Client service and
make sure it has started and Automatic.

Gunnar,

Normally if you have something like a DSL connection, the DSL Modem/Router
needs to have the DHCP server turned on.

To test your XP workstation, open a good old DOS window.

Type ipconfig /all This will display all of your nics, ip addresses,
gateway, and dns servers.

Now try ipconfig /release This should let go of the ip address and if you
do ipconfig /all, you should see 0.0.0.0.

Finally try ipconfig /renew This should give you a new ip address.

I have found if things are messed up these commands will give you errors
that should point you in the right direction. I did have a problem on an XP
machine where the DHCP CLIENT SERVICE got turned off. You might want to
take a look at it in the task manager.

Hi all
On this topic I have one questioned more. I have one NIC that does not
behave! I CAN MANUALLY GIVE IT AN ip -ADDRESS BUT THEN ONLY INTRANETWORKS,
Not Internet, If I ask for automatic IP-adress I get an error message. The
closet I come to my understanding of the issue (in XP pro) is that the
orginal setup was for an ADSL with PPOE when I am now wanting a shared
connection I cant find how to enable the the DHCP clinet (Of cource I can
add the DHCP client is started). This Microsoft stuff drives me mad
sometimes even if it might be to my own lack of knowledge.!
I know it ios off topic and I gladly pay my fees if I get enligtment!
Sorry Bernie not give an answer but only one question more!
