If you are going to try manual ip config then you would also have to put in the gateway ip address(your router's ip). That should give you the internet.

To test your XP workstation, open a good old DOS window. Type ipconfig /all This will display all of your nics, ip addresses, gateway, and dns servers. Now try ipconfig /release This should let go of the ip address and if you do ipconfig /all, you should see 0.0.0.0. Finally try ipconfig /renew This should give you a new ip address. I have found if things are messed up these commands will give you errors that should point you in the right direction. I did have a problem on an XP machine where the DHCP CLIENT SERVICE got turned off. You might want to take a look at it in the task manager.
