Dennis -
I went through the same crap with Qwest. They
called their software a "soft gateway" and their system
wouldn't run without it. It was a dial up DSL service
instead of the always on DSL. I dumped them and got
a full refund of everything I'd paid them.
Qwest had this happen with so many customers that
they abandoned the "soft gate" in this area. Now DSL is
full time and can go from the modem into a router instead
of needing a computer. Qwest's software was a disaster
area. It took over computers completely and came up over
the complete desktop and could make the host computer
completely unusable.
Cable usually offers way better and faster service
for about the same price. I have Comcast 3.6 megabit for
about $45 / month. Once it was installed there were no
further problems and it requires no special software as
it is plain ole ethernet.
