Steve, Most likely, that is your problem! As suggested earlier, turn the SCRATCH settings to ON. Use the recommended approach of "SCRATCH TMP" in RBEngine8.CFG. Also, I strongly suggest that you apply the latest updates. (you are almost four months behind <g>) http://www.rupdates.com/rbg8/

No necessary if everything works accordingly after settings up the SCRATCH settings and if you are able to get back in the database designer.
