Yes, I haven't asked them yet whether they have purchased any new equipment,
and to warn them that if they haven't chances are none of these new programs
will even work. I agree that hardware upgrade needs to be priority #1 for this
client. They remain thrilled with the old 4.5 system and are reluctant to
switch to a different program. A consultant friend of mine who lives near
them stopped by and showed them some examples of new RBase programming and the
client said he really loved what he saw. So maybe the seeds are planted ....

If they decide to stick with 4.5 and not spend any money, it will be very
difficult for me to go back to supporting this ancient app. Actually I'm not
sure I can remotely support it; back when I last worked with them we were using
the DOS version of Carbon Copy over a dialup -- I would have to at least see
if they can install PCAnywhere on their hardware, hopefully over an internet
connection. Have any consultants out there actually refused to support these
old apps? Or do I do it so that I can be there in case they decide to upgrade
down the road? I have no active clients who are "older" than 6.5 and it would
be very hard to get excited spending my valuable time working on a 4.5 app
when so far there's no shortage of working on exciting new apps.
