Hi, Merf -

Welcome back to the R:BASE list!

To answer your specific questions below,

1. Running the DOS version under XP Pro should not be a problem - here is a
sample batch file that works for me:

net use lpt1: \\Dell-1720\HPL1022 /p:yes
path=C:\RBTI\RBDOS65;%path%
CD \clients\trm\db
rbase65

The error message, 'insufficient memory to continue this function', can be
caused in a CHOOSE list in which the number of items exceeds the memory
limit of your DOS window. Change the CHOOSE list to limit the number of
items and it may solve this problem.

2. You don't mention whether you are using the DOS or the Windows version
of 6.1a - so if it's DOS, I'd suggest that you get the 7.6 version of DOS
and upgrade your existing database to that. It should be a relatively
seamless upgrade, but with all the fixes since version 6.1a. If you are
running the Windows version of 6.1a, I'd upgrade to version 6.5++ for
Windows - again, to get all the bug fixes.

Then, either way, you can run BOTH the legacy version AND version 7.6 for
Windows on the same database at the same time. You can then upgrade just
one menu choice at a time and not feel like you have to do it all at once.

Have fun upgrading!
Sami

Subject: [RBASE-L] - Running 6.1a and 7.6 side-by-side on XP

Hello everyone.

Didn't you all used to be on Compuserve? I'm a little behind the
times, I've been away for a few years, but there are some familiar
names here that it's really good to see!

I (re-) joined this list a few weeks ago, as I need to 'revive' a
couple of old R:Base applications, and I've been lucky enough to get
a bargain copy of 7.6. However, I haven't actually installed my new
toy yet, although everything I've seen posted here has got me itching
to try it!

I've managed to get my old 6.1a (Build 1.700xRT01) running on XP Pro,
but it isn't as reliable as I'd like; every now and then I get
'insufficient memory to continue this function' messages from R:Base
(but it has never lost or corrupted any data), or Windows will
randomly declare that 'R:Base has had a problem and it needs to
close' (which _does_ destroy data -- but I learned about the value of
backups years ago, so it's never more than a relatively minor loss).

So my questions for the list are:
1: Are there any particular tips or tricks to getting 6.1a to run
reliably under XPPro? I need to run the old apps 'as is' for a while
before I update (or re-develop) them. (I tried it on my old Windows
2000 Pro machine, but it seems even less reliable there -- however,
that might be down to the machine itself, as it currently has other
problems anyway.)
2: Can 6.1a and 7.6 co-exist on the same machine without conflict?
Are there any special traps to watch for? I don't necessarily want to
run them simultaneously (though that would be very helpful as I learn
all the new stuff!). If it isn't advisable to have both on the same
PC, then I guess I'll have to re-build the W2K one and move 6.1a
there -- any hints or tips for that?

I'm working exclusively single-user for now, but I hope to go multi-
sometime, one day, maybe... My main machine is currently XPPro, but
I'm learning various flavours of linux and will be really, really
pleased to learn that a version of R:Base for linux is in the works.

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm sure that you guys will have
already conquered these problems; I apologise for dragging them up
again.

Best regards to all

Merf
