Why are they using R:Base? Very simple! I wrote that app for them back in 2004 when 7.1 was released, and it has been ROCK SOLID every day since then. Would this client notice any difference if I upgrade them to 7.6? It's a tiny database, they have no clue what an r> prompt is, have asked me to do no more than about 10 hours of work total over the past 4 years (no hours at all in 2008). I'm sure they would want to see some "bang" for their upgrade bucks. I'll tell them to go ahead and get a new server and take their chances. If 7.1 does not run well, then for sure they will have to upgrade! Hate to wish bad luck on them, but .....
