Richard:

A recommendation on configuration. Use the IP address of the server ONLY
IF either: a) you or your direct assigns control the email server and
manage its DNS, or: b) you use the IP for immediate testing purposes.

Large services (like AT&T) may "move servers around" behind DNS; so the
IP address of today is not necessarily the address of tomorrow.
