I strongly recommend to not try to attach to a database over a VPN if possible. Your performance will be slow and any time you drop an internet connection, you risk corrupting the database. This is the same for all databases, not just Rbase .
I have for many years used Remote Desk Top and a Terminal Server. I have a modest server setup (Dell PowerEdge 700 with 2 gig ram) and have 12-15 users on it continously running Rbase . The speed is better than work stations connected locally at the office! I have printers setup so they can print remotely as well. If you lose a connection, simply reconnect back and you will see your app sitting in the exact place as when the connection dropped. (Remember the process is running on the server not the remote PC) I have been extremely pleased with this setup. Pros - One application to maintain. Same for everyone, either local or remote. You can remote control or shadow the RDP sessions, so you can train or assist remote users. You do not have to worry about remote users leaving thier sessions open. You can close them from the server. Data back ups are seamless as the data is local. Required Internet band width is very small. All you are sending is key strokes and screen shots. No data nor file locking schema. (I use a DSL line for 5 remote users and see no speed loss) Cons- Need a server, but not a high end unit. Need Microsoft Terminal services (an additional cost) Each user will need a Client Access License for terminal services. (An additional cost) Citrix also has remote applications that are highly rated as well. However when they try to access the database this way it is very slow and freezes up on them so I believe that the bandwidth is not sufficient. I have a database that is used by employees that work outside of the office. Currently we are using the synchronizer to sync their data every week but I really don’t want to continue doing this. I need to make this so that they can connect from outside and be able to directly update the database with their data. I tried the RWeb and Codecharge but I couldn’t get it to run on my machine before my trial period was up and Codecharge doesn’t seem very user friendly. Does anyone have anything like this up and running? What would be my best options here?
