I use a VPN at 2 different clients. A VPN-only solution at one client is almost unusable as it is so slow. Since I'm a developer, I do all my work on a local copy of the database, debug and test it on the C: drive, then copy the files to the network and do minimal testing. If I had to use the VPN to do actual work on the network copy, it would be impossible.
At the other client, I use a VPN to gain entrance to the client's network. Once I'm connected, I then fire up a copy of PCAnywhere on my machine and go directly to the particular workstation that I want to work on. Lightening fast. I'm no network person -- I think they have me using the VPN for security reasons -- otherwise I guess I don't know why I couldn't just do the PCAnywhere by itself...
