David,
I've run Rbase 7.6 on my OSX machine using Parallels using Windows XP pro and Windows 7. You have to have the Windows OS (I use XP Pro mainly) loaded into a Virtual Machine Session. You can configure Parallels to run the Rbase 7.6 session with in OSX itself but you have to have the Virtual Session running to access the application. Or you can run the 7.6 under the windows OS. One thing to remember is that the Virtual Machine Sessions are one large file on the hard drive. The more demand you put on the Virtual Machine Session the reduction in performance of the over all machine. I max'd out my iMac with 6 virtual session running different application with in each session along with 16 application running in OSX. Do not attempt to load several virtual sessions all at once because it will slow the load time down because of so much disk activity. I run only one session at a time (Server 2K, Server 2003, Windows 7, Windows XP Pro) mainly Server 2003 (I have a SFTP service running for remote backup of a client's database). I eliminated three machine by going to OSX and using Parallels. Remember the more things you run on the iMac that demand HD resources it will slow the machine down performance. Also if Time Machine is running you'll see peaks and valley in performance because of the back up activity. You have to balance your activities and know your limits. If they are going back and forth between a few OSX applications and the Rbase session then you should not have any issues with speed. I've tested some of my applications on the iMac. I found that they run just as good compared to windows pc or even better in some cases. The one thing I can say is I've not killed (crashed) the iMac but I have pushed her to her limits! I've had very few blue screen of death in the windows virtual sessions either! If you want to call me and we can talk about this! Skype number is oma.cox Or 662.820.7599. Have a great day! It's been a few years since initial set up, but my recollection: in parallel desktop (Windows) on the Mac it was straight forward, target/set working directory, etc. no different than PC's. -Brad Davidson From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of David Blocker Sent: Tuesday, April 14, 2009 9:13 AM To: RBASE-L Mailing List Subject: [RBASE-L] - Subject: Running R:Base 7.5 or 7.6 on MAC s with OS 10 and Parallel Desktop Hi all I have a client that would like to run R:Base (now 7.1, upgrading to 7.5 or 7.6) on MAC workstations using OS 10 and the program "Parallel Desktop". John at RBTI says they have no experience at their office, but says some of you have. If you have run R:Base 7.1, 7.5 and/or 7.6 in such an environment, I'd like to hear of your experiences and if there are any special steps you needed to take to make it work. Thanks!
