I should have added, your client will likely have to do a copy/paste from
the viewer to his older version to do a saveAs in a format digestible by
Gateway...

Can you use Gateway Import command to import a spreadsheet .xlsx file? It
won't work for me with the xls or xlsw command. The client is receiving
these files from an external source, and doesn't have Office 2007 to do a
'save as' the older version.
