No, it's a completely different format.  Gateway would need an upgrade to 
understand XLSX.

It won't work for me with the xls or xlsw command.   The client is receiving 
these files from an external source, and doesn't have Office 2007 to do a 'save 
as' the older version.

They will have to convert the spreadsheet to the older version.  This can be 
done by opening and saving in an XLSX compatible version of Office, or you can 
get a (free) plug-in for older Office versions to allow opening XLSX.  Since 
this will be an increasing problem for your client, they should at least 
install 
those plug-ins so they can handle other peoples Word documents as well.

If you want the process to be completely automated you'll have to use a 
command-line batch converter.  Here's a link to one that's well reviewed at
