The version of Office 2003 I have here can open XLSX and DOCX file no problem. I can then save to 2003 versions if I wish. Perhaps if they do Windows Updates for their Office installation they would have this capability? My Excel version is 11.8328.8324 - Excel 2003 SP3. Can you use Gateway Import command to import a spreadsheet .xlsx file? It won't work for me with the xls or xlsw command.
