Gary:  Yep, need to have valid "0" in there.  There's really no need to 
have a macro to replace the "x" with anything, since gateway will ignore the 
"x" during the import and leave the resulting field null.   It's just strange 
that I never noticed this behavior before

Guess what!  Just tested it with 9.1 32bit, 0714, and it works fine there 
with the nulls!  A blank in the spreadsheet comes in blank!  Another "dig" 
I'll be able to get at the client for upgrading ....
