Sounds like your problem to me.

Troubleshooting Tip #0123
Printing from DOS applications

Since most DOS applications were developed before this model printer was
designed, they will probably not provide a specific printer driver for this
model. Instead, you can select an alternate driver from your DOS program if
available. This printer and driver is designed to work with Window
applications and therefore DOS applications may not work properly in every
case.

For color & monochrome printing select:
LQ-2550 or LQ-860 if available.

For monochrome printing only select:

LQ-850
LQ-510
LQ-500
any other LQ- model
EPSON 24-Pin Compatible
EPSON Compatible 24-Pin Dot Matrix
If none of these are listed, call your software manufacturer for printer
driver updates.

Go to the source. What does the printer manual say about communicating with
it? You do have have this manual?? <g>.
