Yes, your column, report, and table assumptions are correct.  Actuals are -
COLUMNS
typeid  TYPE
prjqty  QUANTITY
trarate COST
prjdate DATE

REPORT Prints
prjdate prjqty  trarate vtotal (which is (prjqty*trarate))

TABLE Contains
typeid (which contains A, B, C, .......?)

YOUR QUESTIONS
1. Define the date range that is required? Sorry, guess I don't understand
this.
2. Are the between dates defined by entry before the report is run?  The
between dates for printing/viewing would be defined at time of running the
report and would be in the range of dates in prjdate.
3. Are between dates part of the where for printing the report?  Yes.
