>> She has a single user copy of 2.11, running on Win 98.
No network, local printer. Everything fine until she bought
a "Lexmark Z31 ink jet". I don't understand what she means
by this "tab", but she says:
"When I bought the printer I made sure it would
print to old DOS programs, but it doesn't - not to
any of my old DOS stuff, like XTPRO. When you tell it to
print -- then a box comes up that has a tab that the user
can access to set for DOS printing. Nothing happens when
I do that. " <<
>From the Lexmark Site:
How do I print from DOS, a DOS prompt, or a DOS
application?
Printing from "true" DOS, a DOS prompt, or a DOS
application.
For Windows 3.1 it is recommended that you have
at least 8MB of RAM. For
Windows 9x we recommend at least 16MB of RAM.
When you print from a DOS application, your
printer uses PCL 3
emulation. You must install a printer driver
for PCL 3 emulation in each
DOS application(We recommend the HP 500c
DeskJet).
In Windows 3.1, avoid switching from your
DOS application to another
application while your job is printing. See
the README file for your
Lexmark printer for more information.
To print from DOS applications that run from the
Windows DOS prompt:
1.Make sure the Lexmark Color Jetprinter is the
Default printer.
2.Make sure you are in Windows, not native DOS.
3.From the printer's Control Program (found in
the Program Manager in win
3.x, and under Programs in the Start Menu in
win 9x) click the Options
Tab.
Make sure Disable CJxxxx DOS Printing
(Enable DOS Printing to other
Printers) is not checked.
4.Double-click the MS-DOS icon located in the
Main group of Windows 3.x
under Program Manager. In Win95, click
Start, then go to MS-DOS found
under Programs.
5.Start your application from the MS-DOS
prompt.
6.Install the HP DeskJet 500C as the current
printer in the DOS application
from which you are printing.
Some applications offer a color or black
(mono) version of the HP DeskJet
500C driver. Choose the black (mono) version
if you are printing in black
only. Choose the color version if you are
printing in color and black.
If your application does not offer the
HP DeskJet 500C printer driver,
install the DeskJet 500 printer driver.
You will not be able to print in
color with the DeskJet 500 printer
driver.
For help installing a printer, see your
application user's
documentation.
7.If you need to change printer settings that
are not in your application, use
the DOS Printing Tab in the printer's
Control Program.
8.Print as you normally would from your
application.
NOTE: When you make changes to the DOS Printing
Tab, they apply to
DOS print jobs only. When you make changes on
other tabs, they apply to
all print jobs.
To print from DOS applications that will not run
from the Windows DOS
prompt:
1.Start your application from native DOS.
2.Create a print file using the "Print to File"
function of your application. For
help on printing to a file, see your
application user's documentation.
3.Note the directory that the .prn file is
saved to. (ex: C:windows)
4.Shut down the application and restart
windows.
5.Double-click the MS-DOS icon located in the
Main group of Windows 3.x
under Program Manager. In Win95, click
Start, then go to MS-DOS found
under Programs.
6.Open the DOS directory where the .prn file
was save at.
7.Use this DOS command to copy the print file
to the port where the printer
is connected:
copy filename lptx /b
In the command example:
copy is the DOS copy command.
filename is the name of the .prn file
you created.
lptx is the port where your printer is
connected. For example, lpt1 or
lpt2.
/b instructs the computer to send the
data in binary form.
NOTE: Avoid using the DOS Print command to
send a job to the
printer port. The Print command causes
printing delays.
This is a direct cut and paste. I'd send it on to her, and suggest that
she contact Lexmark for further info. She can find info at
www.lexmark.com, choose support. I got this from the FAQs section.
