G'day JM,

I feel your pain.

Is there a service pack 6 for NT4?
If so, have they tried it?

I sometimes experience those symptoms on my Win2K Professional
machine and am at a loss as to being able to reliably duplicate
or eradicate them.

I had a call recently from someone who purchased an off the shelf
contact manager (not based on R:BASE) and upgraded to a later
version and was having a devil of a time. Despite on-site
visits from the vendor and a great many attempts at solving the
problem the only thing that made the symptoms disappear was
changing the machine being the server to another running the
same OS (and lower specifications).

Given that the app tests faultlessly, passes muster with
R:Style and the debugger and performs without the problems on
at least one machine it seems most likely it is hardware\OS
related. Given that then it follows that without doing a
comparison and analysis of all the installed apps and files
and testing the hardware with resources we have not at our
disposal, it would be hard (read impossible) to work out the
cause. With the price of labour being what it is and the
price of hardware falling continually it is not an economic
proposition to track these things down rather than putting the
software on another box, or even another still, until it works.
