Fred:
It sounds to me that you have a problem with the particular printer driver
you are using and/or the R:Base Default Font setting for your printer.
Try to change your Windows printer driver to Generic /Text Only. This
should allow you to control the printer from its front panel.
You can also try to change the R:Base Preferences for the Printer Default
Font to either Terminal or Courier. But unless you also change the printer
driver, I have a feeling Windows will take the output (Type filename) and
send it out in a graphic format.
R:Base for Windows is constrained by the way Windows handles printers. So
you'll have to play around with printer settings, but you may never find a
solution that matches the R:Base for DOS printing solution.
Because R:Base for DOS is a DOS program, it can bypass most, if not all, of
the Windows printer controls if you capture the printer port (Windows NT,
2K, and XP are less cooperative with this than Windows 9x and ME). But
since R:Base for Windows is a Windows program, it doesn't have that
capability.
Good luck!

I would print it to a laser printer in landscape on legal paper.
Laser printers print a lot faster than dot matrix printers.
