Dennis, I have been scanning documents into R:base for over a year now. We have scanned over 75,000 pages to date. The whole process is simple, and R:base manages everything very well. I put each page in it's own file and then load it into the database, but you could put multiple pages into a single file if that is easier. My scanners default to putting each page in it's own file.
I have a big file room full of old paper files that no one has touched for a year now. We are debating about scanning it all in, or putting it in storage and shredding it in another 5 years. We have some weird laws about how long we have to keep documents, but legally a scanned image is as good as the original. As far as I know, this has not been tested in the courts. When you want to look at the file, just dump the image out to a file, zip out of R:base or use Launch to view it, and use whatever viewer software you like.
