Dan is not the only person who has had problems like this. In recent months, more and more effort has been made to improve security for mail servers, sometimes at the expense of convenience and smooth operation of a list server. Many mail servers that have "open relay" settings have been getting added to "blacklists." Many ISPs refuse mail from any blacklisted server. Most email goes through multiple mail servers on their way from the source to the ultimate destination. A mail server with an open relay is a wonderful convenience when I connect my laptop to some other company's server, and can still retrieve and send email through my own mail server. However, if I can, so can spammers. My own ISP seems to be torn back and forth, upset that they had to take steps to get off a blacklist, and then assaulted by their own customers who can't get their email when they are "on the road." As I learn more about a) how to recognize through headers and error messages why mail from one address to another is being blocked, and b) how to identify the ISP or mail server administrator to talk to, and c) how to explain to the ISP or mail server administrator how to fix it, I'll share what I learn here. I hope others of you will share what you know, too.
