Alastair:

I tried your command and got the same results. I tried specifying #2
instead of just 2 and the command gave me results but they were not ordered
correctly.

I then created a temporary view with a column name for the actual column and
one for the length column and then selected the data and it worked
correctly.

Puzzling isn't it?

It's not an answer to your problem but at least you have company and a
workaround.

Subject: Sort by function question

Hi all,

Has anybody got any idea why this gives a "Press OK to continue" message
(and no data):

     select Full_Name, (slen(Full_Name)) from All_Names order by 2

whereas this works:

     select Full_Name, (slen(Full_Name)) from All_Names order by 2,1

I am sure, but willing to be proved wrong <g>, that I didn't have to sort
both columns in v6.0a/Dos

Thanks in advance,
Regards, Alastair.
