That's not so weird, actually. When you use the # symbol with a 
number, your order by clause has a different meaning than when you 
use an ordinal number without the # symbol:

ORDER BY 2  

means put in order by the second item selected, in the list of columns 
and expressions after the word SELECT and before the word FROM in 
this query.

ORDER BY #2 

means put in order by the second physical column in the table or view 
after the word FROM, regardless of whether it is presented in the 
SELECT list. 

You are still sorting your list, but you may be sorting it by some value 
not visible.
