Mike S. is not the only one to have experienced this disappearing table
problem.
I too have experienced the "exact" same problem with an earlier build of
R:base
for Windows (6.5++).

In my case, a permanent table was created called QUEUE with seven columns
defined. Throughout the day, rows were dumped into this table, processed
and
eventually purged. On several occassions the QUEUE Table would mysteriously
change to a view. Once I caught on to what was occurring I created a
routine that
would purge the view and re-create the table.

This problem has since stopped after installing newer builds from RBTI.

Your not CRAZY Mike... Just Un-Lucky!
