You would need an external program to do the polling, and then decide on a 
course of action for getting the data into R:Base.  For instance, upon 
receipt of a poll the program could insert a row into a table (via ODBC) 
with a trigger on the table to process the input.

We work with a product that interfaces with RF scanners via TCP/IP; it is 
currently under further development to use an ODBC interface with the 
database.  I know that the company would be willing to talk to you about
