Alastair,

You DON'T NEED to have the SET LAYOUT ON statement immediately before
the BROWSE or EDIT * FROM TableName command.

To SET default LAYOUT to ON, either update your application startup file or
RBASE.CFG file.

Table LAYOUT settings using Object Manager are set for Object Manager only.

Table LAYOUT settings used at the R> prompt can be used at R> prompt and
command files.
