Hi, Dick -
The RBASE.INI file is like the RBASE.CFG file - if it can't find one, it
will create one in the working folder.
Here is my philosophy on placing the RBASE.INI file:
1. Ideally, the folder structure for one database is: RBTI\RBWin65\Rbdata.
I place the RBASE.INI file in the RBDATA folder with the 3 files as:
MSGPath=..
HelpPath=..
CFGFile=..\RBASE.CFG
This way, there is no maintenance on individual workstations, and I can be
sure all users are running the same copy of R:BASE. I don't use individual
RBASE.CFG file any more - If I need the user's name, I get it from their
network login.
2. If the application files need to be stored separately from the database
files, then ideally the users are all mapped to the same set of drive
letters, and I put the RBASE.INI file in the data folder. The ini file
references the R:BASE application file folder. Again, there is no
maintenance on individual workstations this way.
So with that said, I think there is a difference in whether R:BASE has
actually been INSTALLED on a workstation, and is therefore listed in the
registry, or if you are just trying to run it from some other location, but
have not actually done an "install". From my experience, if the user is not
using the R:BASE ODBC drivers, there is no benefit to doing an install - and
system maintenance (installing patches, adding users/workstations, etc.) is
much easier.
FWIW -
Sami
