If you are running the current R:Base versions, I would recommend not returning the
text values, but return the id column. A fairly recent enhancement allows a checkbox
menu to return the integer PK while displaying the text you choose. This would obviate
the parsing problems with the list.

CHOOSE vList FROM #VALUES FOR CompanyName,CompID +
  FROM Customers +
  ORDER BY CompanyName +
  AT CENTER CENTER CHKBOX FOOTING

SET VAR vList = ('(' + .vList + ')')

R>SHO VAR vList
R>(123,334,12,254,77,898,237,105)

This makes for a shorter list, allowing more choices (1500 character text variable
length limit allows quite a few integers), and there is no need to quote the inner
items, which in turn eats up more of the 1500 available characters.
