Postings to the RBase-L list and e-mails to and from Neil Smith, however, show a slightly different story about beta testing and jumping on bandwagons:
On 30th June 2003 details were posted to RBase-L about a "pre-purchase program" but until that time RBTI had restricted the beta testing program to "selected" users.
It wasn't until 23rd July 2003 that Neil was able to confirm the "pre-purchase program" price and send me a form to sign.
It so happens that I found those terms and the conditions that were to be applied unacceptable. I thought that paying - in full - in advance - for something that did not then exist in a released version was unwise. Nor did I think that the conditions which beta-testers were obliged to agree to and sign were acceptable. It was also the summer and, in the UK at least, it was a good one and we need to make the most of those rarities.
With hindsight that was undoubtedly the correct decision as the released version appeared within 4 months.
I e-mailed Neil on the 19th September 2003 - the date that the release announcement was posted to the RBase-L list - asking for order details and I placed my order on Aspen Software's web-site before the 26th which was when their confirmation was dated.
It would have been difficult to be more ready to buy the product as soon as it was available but, in any case, it was not despatched until the 3rd October and delivered on the 6th. So, actually, it's only eleven months!
