Alastair: I have been using 7.0 since January 2003 when I took the training course; if I am not mistaken, the cost of the course included one license for 7.0...not a bad deal. At that time, we were not allowed to install 7.0 at our clients, as it was strictly Beta. After the official version was released, we were allowed to install at our clients a version that was if not fully debugged, at least far along enough to be usable. Since then, the pace of implementation of requested features and "bug fixing" has been in high gear; just yesterday morning I requested a feature and by the end of the day I had a version of the software with the implemented feature. I can't say enough of how responsive RBTI has been (at least in my case) to addressing issues. I wish that I would have been allowed to install the earlier releases at my clients earlier, but I can understand RBTI's position of not wanting "preliminary" versions out. As far as the wording on the Beta Program Agreement, I have been a Beta tester for several other software packages and I can assure you that I have seen a heck of a lot more restrictive/binding agreements from other software developers, the one used by RBTI is no more or no less restrictive/binding that those used by other developers. Having just gone through a bout over "software intellectual rights" with a client, I can assure you that software developers need exercise due diligence to protect their intellectual work, I know that I am a lot more careful now. It so happens that I found those terms and the conditions that were to be applied unacceptable. I thought that paying - in full - in advance - for something that did not then exist in a released version was unwise. Nor did I think that the conditions which beta-testers were obliged to agree to and sign were acceptable. It was also the summer and, in the UK at least, it was a good one and we need to make the most of those rarities. With hindsight that was undoubtedly the correct decision as the released version appeared within 4 months. I e-mailed Neil on the 19th September 2003 - the date that the release announcement was posted to the RBase-L list - asking for order details and I placed my order on Aspen Software's web-site before the 26th which was when their confirmation was dated. It would have been difficult to be more ready to buy the product as soon as it was available but, in any case, it was not despatched until the 3rd October and delivered on the 6th.
