I specifically asked that our virus scanning products leave our *.rb* files
alone. Why bother scanning the database on each access?
(I know of at least two well know order entry/accounting packages that
publish
statements that anti-virus software must have their file types excluded or
severe
degradation will be seen)

You should expect speed to about double when you go from one to two users. I
think the other issue is a much larger increase -- about 10 or 20 times. Is
that what you're seeing? If so, I have to amend my statement about never
having heard of it happening outside of 2K server.
