David:
To expand on Claudine's response I might add that one of my clients, The US
Air Force has standardized on Windows XP PRO and not longer uses Windows 2K
as the Mainstream Support Phase for Windows 2K has ended and it has entered
the Extended Support Phase. What this means in practical terms is that
Windows 2K will no longer receive any fixes and/or upgrades other that
critical and/or security related for the following 5 years.
As far as hardware, there are two philosophies; some user believe in getting
the latest/fastest available with the idea that it will last 4-5 years, some
other believe in getting the cheapest current hardware and replacing it
every 2-3 years...it really depends how the cost is expensed/amortized as to
which I the best approach...

Subject: [RBG7-L] - RE: System Requirements for 7.5: new hardware and
network

David,

All my workstations run WIN2K on 2.4 Pentium 4s w/1 GB Network cards and 512
Memory. Switching to a 1 GB network switch really makes a big difference
and my setup hums right now... My main server is Windows Small Business
Server 2003 but my file server is still NT4 (soon to be upgraded).

Hope that helps.

Claudine
