David,

Assuming this is a total replacement and there are at least 10 workstations,
here is what I would do;

The server should be configured with Windows Server 2003. Build as much
redundancy into the server as you can.(i.e. Raid 5 on the data drives, Raid
1 on the boot drive, hot swappable drives, 2 power supplies, dual network
cards, dual power supplies, tape backup drive. 2 GB Server memory and as
large a raid as the budget allows. Remember, the server will be running
24/7. Money invested in the server is money well spent. Even if they're not
re-wiring, I would get 10,100,1000 network cards and a gigabit switch.

The work stations are your choice but there are very good buys now on Dell
Precisions configured with 3.0Ghz Pentium4 processors, gigabit network
cards, 1 GB of RAM and Windows XP Pro SP2. There are also good prices on the
DELL 17" flat panels. Needless to say, each workstation, the server and all
switches should be protected with a UPS. I highly recommend the APC units
(apcc.com).

I know all this sounds like a lot of money, but there are reasonable lease
rates and the difference of $200 per month to get state of the art versus
cheap,cheap is well worth it.

Call me if you'd like, I've done this many times.

Subject: [RBG7-L] - System Requirements for 7.5: new hardware and network

A client of mine is upgrading their very old hardware and network to a new
system, expressly to handle 7.5 for Windows in the coming months. I've sent
them the minimum requirements listed on the web site, but would appreciate
input from any of you who have recently been down the same road for
suggestions both on hardware and optimum network operating system.
