All of your various responses have been quite informative. Thank you all. But all of this discussion begs the question; what is the advantage of indexed shifters over friction? In my mind, there is none, and I now give the edge to friction. Tell me why I'm wrong. :)

Turned out that I greased the threads on the DT adjuster barrel/cable stop (when I shouldn't have) and so whenever I turned my handlebars, the SIS cable housing would spin the barrel out of adjustment.
